The Sardine Run remains one of nature’s great mysteries. While several theories attempt to explain this incredible migration, no one fully understands why it happens. What is certain is that it offers a spectacular experience for birdwatchers, marine-life enthusiasts, snorkelers, and divers of all levels. Whether viewed from above or beneath the waves, the Sardine Run is widely regarded as one of the greatest marine spectacles on Earth.
To complete this unforgettable adventure, we head inland for a Big Five safari experience before returning home.
Bayala Private Safari Lodges are located within the Zuka Private Game Reserve in Zululand, just three hours north of Durban. Part of a pioneering rewilding project that began in 2001, the reserve now protects over 10,300 hectares of restored wilderness and serves as an inspiring example of conservation in action.
Home to the Big Five, as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, and an abundance of birdlife, Zuka offers an exceptional safari experience in a diverse and thriving ecosystem.
Bayala’s family-friendly lodges combine comfort, affordability, and authentic African hospitality. Guests can enjoy stylish lounges, indoor and outdoor dining, swimming pools, and the unique opportunity to relax in the heart of the wilderness.
Conservation is at the heart of Bayala. Guests can gain insight into ongoing wildlife protection efforts and, subject to availability, may even participate in hands-on conservation activities.

Day 1: Port St. Johns
Upon arrival at Johannesburg Airport, connect to your midday flight to Umtata, arriving at approximately 15:00.
From Umtata, a road transfer will take you to Port St. Johns, with arrival expected around 16:00.
Upon arrival, a mandatory Sardine Run briefing will be held. Please ensure that all diving equipment is handed in at the dive centre during this session.
The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Weather permitting, we will take you to one of the area’s scenic viewpoints to enjoy sundowners while overlooking the spectacular Wild Coast.
Day 2: Port St. Johns
Today marks the first of six unforgettable days on the world-famous Sardine Run Ocean Safari.
Each day begins with an early departure from Port St. Johns, usually between 07:30 and 08:00. After an exhilarating surf launch from the Umzimvubu River, our experienced skippers and crew head out in search of the incredible marine activity that makes this event so unique.
Using local expertise, extensive communication networks, and aerial support from our gyrocopter pilot, we search for signs of action such as feeding dolphins, whales, sharks, seabirds, and, of course, the sardine bait balls themselves. No two days are ever the same, making every outing a unique adventure.
Once activity is located, the crew will determine the best way to experience it. Fast-moving action is typically viewed while snorkelling, while more stationary encounters may allow for scuba diving opportunities. Whether you choose to snorkel, dive, or enjoy the spectacle from the boat, everyone has a front-row seat to one of nature’s greatest marine events.
Daily excursions typically last between 6 and 8 hours, depending on sea conditions and wildlife activity. We make the most of every opportunity and often remain at sea longer than other operators to ensure guests enjoy the best possible experience.
Return to shore in the late afternoon and spend the evening relaxing as you reflect on another extraordinary day along South Africa’s Wild Coast.
Day 3-7: Port St. Johns
Another day of adventure on the Indian Ocean, tracking the movement of the sardines and searching for the extraordinary marine life that gathers around this remarkable natural phenomenon.
Day 8: KwaZulu Natal Game Reserves
After breakfast, depart Port St. Johns and travel north through the scenic landscapes of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to Bayala Private Safari Lodges. The journey takes approximately 9 hours, offering a glimpse into rural South Africa and the beautiful countryside of Zululand.
Arrive at the lodge in time to settle in before embarking on your first afternoon game drive. Accompanied by an experienced ranger, venture into the reserve in search of the Big Five and a wealth of other wildlife that call this remarkable wilderness home.
Return to the lodge as the sun sets over the African bush and enjoy a relaxing evening under the stars.
Day 9-10: KwaZulu Natal Game Reserves
Enjoy two full days immersed in the African wilderness. Each day includes a morning and afternoon game drive, offering excellent opportunities to encounter the Big Five, as well as giraffe, zebra, cheetah, antelope, and a rich diversity of birdlife.
Led by experienced guides, game drives take place during the cooler hours of the day when wildlife is most active. Between safari activities, relax at the lodge, enjoy the surrounding bushveld, or simply unwind by the pool while taking in the sights and sounds of the African wilderness.
Every game drive is unique, with new wildlife encounters and unforgettable moments waiting around every corner.
Day 11: End of Itinerary
Enjoy one final early morning game drive, offering a last opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the African bush and perhaps spot some of the reserve’s iconic wildlife before your journey home.
Return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out and departing for Durban Airport. Connect with your flight to Johannesburg and continue with your onward international journey.
As your adventure comes to an end, take with you unforgettable memories of South Africa’s incredible marine and wildlife experiences—from the excitement of the Sardine Run to the magic of a Big Five safari.
